Using your Awning: Dos and Don’ts

December 6, 2015

You’ve invested in that beautiful awning. It’s not only handy for shade and cover in inclement weather, but it’s also an addition that brings value and aesthetic to your home or business. But, now that you’ve got that essential shade structure up, what should you do and not do to take care of it?
Here’s a quick rundown of some things to keep in mind when it comes to the dos and don’ts of using your awning:

  • Do clean your awning and make sure to brush off dirt and wipe off debris. You can also clean it by hosing it down and letting it air dry.
  • Don’t use chemical cleaners on the awning’s fabric. This can destroy your awning’s special features like mold and mildew resistance or even its fire retardant qualities.
  • Don’t let tears or rips go unfixed, these can get bigger and eventually your awning will fall apart.
  • Do use your awning in winter. You can use a combination of an awning and drop curtains to create an outdoor space you can enjoy, even when it’s cold.
  • Don’t cook under your awning; no barbecues or grills that can cause damage to the fabric.
  • Do inspect your awning regularly and look for wear and tear in the frame and the fabric and fix it as soon as possible.
  • Don’t let trees and other foliage grow too close to or on your awning.
Truly, there are a number of things you can do to keep your awning in great shape. The above list is just a few of the important things you ought to do to keep your awning looking good.

Remember, awnings are an investment and just like anything else, they are susceptible to depreciation if not care for properly.
